Passalacqua, the 18th-century villa that dethroned its more famous neighbours.
Passalacqua occupies a stretch of Lake Como that has, for some two centuries, been the quiet one — the lake's western shore, tucked between Moltrasio and Argegno. The Villa was built in 1787 for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, who had three things in mind: a place to read, a place to compose, and a place to not be bothered.
The De Santis family bought it in 2018. It opened, properly, in 2022. It is, on any credible measure, the best hotel in Italy.
The villa is three floors, twenty-four rooms, and an outrageous amount of fresco. The ceilings in the Music Room — where Bellini is said to have written much of Norma — are worth the flight on their own.
