Overview

Velaa is the Maldivian resort you go to when you have, in some sense, seen every other Maldivian resort. It was built by Jiří Šmejc, a Czech-born hotelier with a very clear conviction that luxury is not marble or gold but space.

Forty-seven villas on 45 acres. You will never see another guest unless you want to. The staff glide. The butler knows. It is, in short, the benchmark.

Rooms

The 260m² Romantic Pool Residence is the one to book. Teak, linen, a private pool that faces west, and the sort of outdoor shower that makes you rethink indoor plumbing.

Dining

Aragu does French with Maldivian restraint. Tavaru, the wine tower, is theatrical in the best way — eight storeys of glass, and a sommelier who has opinions. Book both.

Amenities

The spa is the best in the archipelago and it is not close. The overwater pavilion, and the two treatment rooms that sit half in the lagoon, are genuinely remarkable.

How to book

Go through Doorkey or through your preferred luxury agent. The villa categories matter — the Romantic Pool Residences are the sweet spot. The Private Residences are bigger but further from the main island.

What we loved

  • 01The 260 m² Romantic Pool Residence villas. The ratio of teak to linen is exact.
  • 02Tavaru — the 8-storey wine tower, the island's only vertical gesture.
  • 03Butler service that is attentive without being anywhere near obsequious.
  • 04A lagoon so clear the drone footage embarrasses your own eyes.

What we'd change

  • 01The house wine list leans heavily on Bordeaux; we would like more Burgundy.
  • 02The spa is excellent but the pre-booking system is quaint at best.
